Friday Five – a bit late

Posted by on Friday, 9 April, 2004

1. What do you do for a living?
I’m a pharmacy resident – i.e. a real pharmacist doing post-graduate work in hospital pharmacy practice

2. What do you like most about your job?
talking with patients and their families, coffee breaks, laughing, crying, making a difference, mentoring pharmacy students, and getting those really great rotations with extraordinary preceptors (like Rob Ariano who is getting the Manitoba pharmacist of the year award)

3. What do you like least about your job?
endless days that turn into endless nights, difficult preceptors, never ending project revisions, struggling between being a “student” and being a “real pharmacist”

4. When you have a bad day at work it’s usually because _____…
I don’t look for the good things that happened during the day … like the med student who thanks you for walking them through something, a patient whose question is answered, the guy who held the elevator when you were late for rounds, your favorite song playing on the radio on your way to work, the sun shining when you leave for the day

5. What other career(s) are you interested in?
In no particular order: Chef, Gadget tester, Mother, Publication designer (something like desktop publishing), International spa evaluating person

It’s 2:25

Actually, it’s now 2:45 since I was distracted by looking up the Somogyi effect (i.e. morning rebound hyperglycemia in people with diabetes) vs Dawn phenomenon (i.e. morning hyperglycemia due to normal circadian glucose production).
I have not had sleep since Monday evening. I didn’t sleep last night because I was working on (and finished) two projects: (1) the factor VIII stability project I’m always talking about; and (2) a learning needs assessment complete with surveys. Then I attended a pharmacy managers’ meeting this morning as a part of my administration rotation.
Now I am procrastinating until 3:30 when I have an evaluation with my supervisor regarding the learning needs assessment.
I’m just a tad tired. I think I’m going to try to stay up until a ‘regular’ bedtime tonight so my sleep-wake schedule gets back to near normal. I do get tomorrow off, so sleeping in is well deserved.
Alas, it’s 2:52 and I can’t think of a thing more to write. Perhaps a quick nap then off to my meeting.

On Sunday I was at my buddy Alex’s bridal shower. Here’s the pictures (click to enlarge) if you missed it…
If you want better quality pics, let me know and I’ll email them to you.
