Wind Blows Deeply

news

So, news on Eleanor.
Both front calipers had to be replaced, as does her converter. So there’s no creaking sound upon breaking anymore. They had to order the converter in, so that will be fixed next week. The best part is that it was all covered under the warranty I have. So it really only cost my deductable … a very small fraction of the price.

Way back to when I moved. One of the fish – Becca – went to fishy heaven. She started doing this floating thing for a while, but then she’d swim off, only to end up floating a short time later. When the kink in her back became permanent, such that “swimming off” was too difficult and she was floating far more than swimming, I decided to send her off. So I am left with one solitary fishy. Sarah is doing well, swimming and eating as before.

Office view

July 25, 2005

Office viewArgh – flickr didn’t post my text.
Basically what I had written said … this is the view from my office at home. Blue skies, fluffy clouds, rich green poplar trees, and golden afternoon sunshine. It’s the perfect distraction from trying to work.
While the office is wonderful, I have had a few “issues” with my condo. My bathroom sink started to leak. The cap at the bottom of the trap was cracked. Minor issue. Easily fixed.
Other issues. Not sure if drilling through PVC window sills voids warranty. Haven’t heard back from builder yet. I would really like to put blinds inside the window frame (as opposed to outside). Curtains are up in some locations. The privacy is nice. Cover on sewer drain thing in basement is missing. Patio screen door doesn’t slide well. I think the wheels aren’t in the tracks.
Aside from the condo, Eleanor is also making funny noises. I think the brakes (a strange creaking noise … perhaps the braking mechanism rather than the brake pads), the exhaust system (funny sound on accelerating – not really from the muffler) and the steering (sort of squeeky/creaky). Hopefully this will be covered by the extended warranty. The appointment is on Thursday.
More to come.

Understanding

July 20, 2005

The Menno Melange quoted this excerpt from Bert Newton’s article in The Mennonite:

Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, one of the most popular shows on television, parodies daily news shows, has its own anchor, Jon Stewart, its reporters out in the field and its commentators. Each week it also has a religion segment called “This Week in God.”
Once Steven Colbert, the host of the segment, showed actual news footage of a televangelist expressing his support for the president’s war on terrorism. The televangelist said, “We’ve got to kill the terrorists before the killing stops. I support the president. We need to chase them all over the world, for 10 years, if it takes that long. We need to blow them up in the name of the Lord.” At that point, the camera switched back to Colbert, who said, “And in a related story, Jesus has quit.”
As an evangelical Christian, what I found interesting about that segment was the response of the secular studio audience. They laughed and clapped robustly. I thought, We evangelical, Anabaptist Christians struggle with much of the rest of the church over whether Jesus is about peace–we spend time working out a theology of peace–and for this secular studio audience there is no struggle at all. They don’t have to work out anything. They just assume Jesus is about peace. They assume Jesus would not agree with the televangelist, would not support the president’s war on terrorism or talk about blowing people up in the name of the Lord. They get it.
